What Does a Van Driver Do?

Van drivers in school transportation operate smaller vehicles to transport students who require specialized routing, including special needs students, those in rural areas, and small groups on activity runs. The role combines driving responsibilities with a more personalized level of student care compared to full-size bus routes. Requirements & Licensing

Requirements vary by state and vehicle size. Vehicles carrying fewer than 16 passengers may only require a standard Class C license with appropriate endorsements. Van drivers often work similar split-shift schedules as bus drivers, with morning and afternoon routes. Routes tend to be more flexible and may involve door-to-door service rather than fixed stops.
