Bus Attendant Careers
What Does a Bus Attendant Do?
Bus attendants provide specialized care and supervision for students with physical, behavioral, or medical needs during transport. They assist with wheelchair lifts and securement, administer prescribed medications when authorized, manage behavioral plans, and ensure students with special needs travel safely and comfortably. Attendants work one-on-one or with small groups of students requiring additional support.
Requirements & Licensing
No CDL is required. Attendants must pass background checks and drug screenings. Employers typically require first aid and CPR certification, and many require training in behavioral intervention techniques, wheelchair securement, and medical emergency response. Some positions require experience working with individuals with disabilities. State-specific training mandates vary.
Schedule & Work Environment
Attendants follow the same split-shift school schedule as drivers and monitors. Routes serving special needs students may involve longer travel times and fewer students per vehicle. The work is physically demanding, requiring lifting, bending, and the ability to respond quickly in emergencies. Attendants develop close bonds with the students and families they serve.
Pay & Benefits
Pay ranges from $15 to $22 per hour, with specialized positions at the higher end. Benefits mirror those of other transportation staff, including health insurance and retirement plans for qualifying employees. Some employers offer premium pay for attendants with specialized training or certifications in areas like behavioral management or medical care.
How to Get Started
Apply with school bus companies or school districts. Prior experience in caregiving, special education, or working with individuals with disabilities is highly valued. Employers provide on-the-job training specific to their vehicles, equipment, and student populations. This role is ideal for those passionate about making a difference for students with special needs.
